The hike begins in Staffal, a hamlet of the municipality of Gressoney-La-Trinité located at the upper end of the Valle del Lys.
After leaving the car in the large car park adjacent to the departure point of the ski lifts, take the trail on the orographic left and, skirting the torrent, head towards a white chalet clearly visible from the road. The first part of the route is fairly wide and flat, while the trail then narrows and becomes steeper. After about 50 minutes of walking, you reach the Courtlys alpine pasture, which is characterised by beautiful flower-covered pastures, especially in July. Here, you can take a break and look southwards to admire the landscape: in the background, Mont Nery is clearly recognisable, to the left the steep rock faces of the Punta Teltschò descend, and to the right the Rothorn rises, whose northern slope is often characterised by a few snowfields.
The trail then resumes, crossing a larch forest before reaching the base of the moraine on the right of which is the wide Vallone della Salza, particularly popular in winter with off-piste skiers. From here, the path winds its way up a grassy slope until it reaches the crest of the moraine. Crossing to the left, one arrives at the Lys springs, characterised by a small lake formed by water gushing out of the glacier's terminal tongue. More experienced walkers can then return to the moraine and follow it for another stretch along the glacier, which is full of impressive seracs.
