Set on the Punta Gnifetti of Monte Rosa at 4,554 metres, this is the highest mountain hut in Europe. The CAI Varallo (Varallo Italian Alpine Club) has renovated and managed this hut for over 100 years and is home to a leading atmosphere-physics observatory dedicated to Queen Margherita of Savoy who stayed there in 1893 when it was inaugurated. Today, the running of it has been entrusted to Rifugi Monterosa srl which is focusing on hospitality and technology. It sleeps 70 in rooms with bunk beds and has a bar restaurant.
