Valsesia

Alagna

Alagna Valsesia and Riva Valdobbia are the two twin towns of Upper Valsesia.

Holding hands thanks to the 2 kilometre Schenine path which joins them over the Sesia River, they share in the pleasure of welcoming guests to admire the majesty of the southern face of the Monte Rosa. These two communities are spread out in tens of Walser hamlets where you can walk and find the oldest wooden houses! The Walsers and their culture dates back to 1200!

Valsesia continues upwards to the source of its river, the Sesia Glacier and further climbs up to the border with Switzerland reaching the highest point at Punta Gnifetti (4,559 metres), where there is the Capanna Margherita. Valsesia changes when you descend and these transformations are greatly appreciated by cyclists, water sports lovers and fishermen as they pass through Mollia, Piode, Campertogno and Scopello.

Those who love art and walks in the country will be seduced by the centre of Varallo and its Sacro Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage Site! Valsesia is the Piedmont side of the Monte Rosa and, as such, is home to some great red wines: the Gattinara and Ghemme Nebbiolo wines which you can taste in our restaurants and in the wine cellars of the two lower valley towns. Along the way are the Cashmere Outlets in Vicolungo for those looking for top quality offers. The capital, Vercelli, has a population of around 48,000 inhabitants and an historic centre which art and shopping lovers will be delighted to discover!
